Election fever takes hold in the first Parliament Magazine of the new year, with Declan Ganley of Libertas and ALDE leader Graham Watson waxing lyrical on everything from Euroscepticism to EU decision-making.

"As Eurosceptic winds gather strength, we need a president who will reach across the aisle and build a coalition for European democracy," writes Watson, who has just launched a public campaign for parliament's presidency and says he would "relish" a job at the organisation's helm.

Also concerned with the growth of Euroscepticism, Ganley says that Libertas will campaign for "a Europe for and of the people" and laments the EU's "current disregard for democracy".

The Parliament Magazine's MEP editor Catherine Stihler also looks ahead to the "problematic" elections this June and searches for a solution to bridge the gap between Europe and its citizens.

Morocco is the scene of our special report, with Martin Jay reporting from the EU's close neighbour on the eve of the signing of a historic advanced status agreement between Rabat and Brussels - a relation Morocco's foreign minister Taieb Fassi-Fihri describes as "optimal proximity".

We also take a look at Bulgaria and Romania two years on from joining the EU and find out from Renate Weber and Rumiana Jeleva that the picture is more complicated than at first glance. "There are two sides to the EU for Romanians working in other member states," writes Renate Weber. "Some feel they can now fulfil their dreams, while others face discrimination on a daily basis."

Rumiana Jeleva, meanwhile, is calling for a "fresh wind on the political scene" to free Bulgarian politics from the "egoism, arrogance and nepotism" that is damaging its reputation.

Also in this issue, Meglena Kuneva speaks to Rory Watson after being nominated European (and commissioner) of the year; Fifa's Sepp Blatter talks football for social development; and MEPs comment on cervical cancer prevention week.

Finally, we publish a selection of MEPs' comments on the French presidency, which turned out to be a mixed bag of reviews for Sarkozy and his team.
