Green light for the Commission to negotiate new free trade and economic agreement

In 2008, trade in goods and services between the EU and Canada exceeded EUR 70 billion and the total stock of investment stood at over EUR 260 billion. The Commission has now received the mandate from EU Member States to start trade talks with Canada for an agreement that goes beyond current WTO commitments and reinforces the already strong bilateral trade and investment relationship.

Whilst two decades ago China and Europe traded almost nothing, China has become Europe's biggest source of manufactured imports in recent years. Europe´s imports from China have grown by around 18% per year for the past five years.

The European Commission runs a database for the explicit support of market players in developing countries who want to bring their products on the EU market. The database gives an overview on the EU´s preferential trade regimes established for developing countries as well as lists all tariffs, taxes and other requirements for goods destined for import.
